If the convincing does not go well, then you may need to do some research on the best dog-friendly cities to help guarantee that you can live with your pup. Moving to a city that is more welcoming of our furry friends does mean that you will likely need some dog insurance, so be sure to check into that as well.
If you manage to change your landlord’s mind or you already live in a building that will allow you to have a dog, you may be wondering what are the best dog breeds to live in your apartment? It is true that there are some that are better suited to living in a smaller place, compared to others, so let’s take a look at what I consider to be some of the best apartment dogs around.
5 Dog Breeds for Apartments
- Shih Tzu
The translation of this dog’s name means little lion and if that doesn’t steal your heart, you should know these dogs are actually bred to be companions. As such, you will find her following you from room to room, and the two of you will likely become inseparable, making her one of the best apartment dogs around. If your landlord is a little weary, be sure to make sure that she is properly trained and be cautious around small children. Since she is so small, she requires minimal space and exercise, so she won’t mind the size of your apartment or if you are away for longer periods of time.
- Lhasa Apso
Another one of the cutest small apartment dogs around, this dog has a history of protecting ancient Tibetan temples and will take on the duty of protecting you, as well. This four-legged friend also adapts well to apartment living and is a great first choice for a novice dog owner. Just be ready for a deep bond to develop between the two of you; she has years of breeding to serve as a protector rooted in her present behavior, which means her job will be to keep you safe. She will take this role seriously, so be sure to have her properly trained.
- Tibetan Terrier
Another Tibetan treat, this dog is not actually a Terrier and was bred for a similar purpose like the Lhasa Apso, only instead of the temples, her job was to protect the Buddhist monks and monasteries. If you want a small apartment dog that also has your back, then this breed is a great choice. She has a bit of a stubborn streak but is quite affectionate with her family and those that she loves, so she won’t have an issue getting along with children. This cutie does very well with living in apartments.
- Boston Terrier
These dogs do well and actually prefer to live in smaller spaces, a perfect combination for living in an apartment. She was originally bred to chase vermin (think rats) so if you do have a cat, you will need to properly introduce the two of them so they know how to get along. These dogs are also great protectors of their owners and loved ones and are highly intelligent. Since they require minimal grooming, you and your landlord will appreciate not finding fur all over your apartment.
- Cavalier King Charles Spaniel
Overall, this dog is a great small breed that does well in apartments. She has a pleasant demeanor, she is friendly with her loved ones, and she doesn’t have a problem with strangers. You will want to make sure, however, that she is properly trained. She requires minimal maintenance, a little exercise, and some grooming, but loves to be around you and cuddle next to you. A loyal companion that will be by your side without barking so loud that your neighbors will complain.
It can be tricky to find a dog-friendly city and a dog that will fit well into your life, and your apartment. But when you find that magical combination, you will be glad you did.
Just remember to keep your selection to a dog that is on the smaller size, requires moderate to minimal exercise, and isn’t too temperamental, and the two of you will make great roomies in no time.
